Reflections from March 15, 2022—Day 4 of my journey.

Each morning we wake up is a gift, yet in the midst of life’s chaos, we often forget to acknowledge it. When we go through the darkest, most trying times, gratitude can feel like an impossible thing to hold onto. But it is in these very moments—when grief is heavy, when life feels unfair—that finding even the smallest reason to be grateful becomes most important.

In the months after losing my son, there were days when the sadness was unbearable. Grief would hit in waves, sometimes expected, often out of nowhere. But alongside the pain, something else began to emerge—a realization that Max had changed my life forever. His absence left a void, but his presence, though unseen, became my guiding force.

Finding Purpose in the Darkest Moments

Grief has a way of narrowing our vision. It pulls us into the past, into what was lost, making it difficult to see what still remains. But gratitude shifts that perspective—it forces us to recognize what is still in front of us, what is still possible.

For me, the loss of Max transformed my life in a way I never could have predicted. In those early days, I had no idea the journey I was beginning. I only knew that I had a choice: to let my grief consume me or to find a way to move forward with it.

So I chose to press on.

A Journey Rooted in Gratitude

Now, over 1,000 days later, that choice remains the same. Every day, I wake up and thank God for another opportunity to be better—to grow, to honor Max, to live in a way that makes him proud. Being 1% better each day isn’t just about self-improvement; it’s about gratitude in action. It’s about recognizing that while I can’t change the past, I can choose how I move forward.

And that is what I encourage all of you to do.

If you are in the depths of grief, if you are in the hardest season of your life, I urge you—find something, even the smallest thing, to be grateful for. It won’t erase the pain, but it will remind you that life still holds meaning. That even in the darkest times, light can be found.

Focus on your why. Move forward each day.

Grow through what you go through.
