Reflections from March 12, 2022—the first day of the rest of my life.
This was the day I took my first step toward transformation, a journey that would take me to places I never thought possible. On this day, I made a vow: to strive to be 1% better every single day.
Many people start journeys like this, but too often, those journeys come to an end. The difference between those who continue and those who stop is the fire that fuels them. A fire that cannot be extinguished. A fire that pushes forward when everything else says to stop.
For me, that fire is my son, Max.
The Catalyst for Change
Day one of my 1% better journey was a day I didn’t feel like doing it. I didn’t feel like getting on that treadmill. I didn’t feel like pushing myself. The voice in my head told me, Take the day off. One more day won’t make a difference.
But in that moment, I turned to my purpose—Max.
And I did it anyway.
That single decision, that simple choice to show up when I didn’t feel like it, was the spark that ignited everything that followed. I had no idea at the time just how pivotal that moment would be. But looking back, I see it clearly. That was the moment my fire took hold, and it has burned inside me ever since.
Motivation vs. Discipline
For a long time, I had bouts of motivation. But motivation is fleeting—it comes and goes like the tide. True transformation doesn’t happen through motivation alone. It happens when your purpose is so deeply ingrained in you that it builds discipline—the ability to keep going, especially when you don’t feel like it.
Discipline is what carries you forward when motivation fades. And discipline is born from purpose.
From Thinking to Doing
Self-doubt is one of the biggest barriers to change. It creeps in when you least expect it, whispering reasons to wait, to hesitate, to stay comfortable. On this day, I had to face that doubt head-on.
I told myself, I think I have what it takes to stay disciplined. But then, I realized that thinking wasn’t enough. Doing was what mattered.
That was the moment everything shifted.
When we stop thinking and start doing, we gain the tools necessary to move forward. We become doers. And doers build momentum, brick by brick, one step at a time.
1% Better—A Way of Life
I found my purpose in the son I lost—my beautiful boy, Max, born still at 28 weeks. Every single day, I remind myself:
Be 1% better today so Max can look down from heaven and be proud to call me his dad.
But 1% better isn’t just about the gym. It isn’t just about physical strength. It’s about how we live. It’s about pushing forward in every aspect of life—mentally, emotionally, spiritually. It’s about choosing growth over comfort, action over hesitation, purpose over excuses.
This journey is bigger than me. It’s bigger than any one challenge or setback. It’s about honoring Max’s life by making the most of my own.
And so, every day, I keep that promise.
One step at a time.
One decision at a time.
One percent better—every single day.
